Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store Comes to Canada

December 11th is the day Video Marketplace will launch in canada.

Currently only movies will be available but TV shows will soon follow.

The pricing is comparable to what you see in Canada for other video on demand services. For Library titles, movies will be 310 Microsoft Points (Standard Definition) and 460 Points (High Definition), and for Current titles, they’ll be 460 Points (SD) and 610 Points (HD).

So to break that down. $1 CAD = 70 points.

Old title SD: $4.50
Old title HD: $6.60

New title SD: $6.60
New title HD: $8.70

Note: numbers rounded.

Alternate title: Using Mechanize to Scrape Orkut for Love Letters from Lonely Brazilian Beauties and Translating their Wantings to English

Shout outs to Natai for the request.

In this tutorial we will use mechanize to login to Orkut, pull our scrap messages, we will assume the message is written in Portuguese and translate the message to English with Google Translate.

FUN!

Send me your favorite vi Commands and Stories

Vi has been around for over 30 years now and in celebration of that we are compiling a list of obscure vi/vim commands and anecdotes.

Send your submission to viroundup@gmail.com or comment in this article. Include a useful vi/vim command and or anecdote about how vi saved the day. After two weeks I will be compiling a large article of your submissions so be sure to include your name and or homepage so I may cite you.

Getting Data from MySQL into Excel

The other title of this article could be Outputting data from MySQL into a Comma Separated Value file (.csv)

Short and sweet, this article is more for me to store this SQL syntax in an easily recoverable place as I seem to forget how to use it every time I need to output something into CSV format from MySQL.

Multiple Concurrent Database Connections with ActiveRecord

ActiveRecord is a great tool to use for database maintenance as I explored in my previous article, Using ActiveRecord for Simple Maintenance Scripting, but what if you need to do tasks that require you to be connected to multiple databases at once.

Perhaps you want to compare records in one database and copy them to another, well heres how you do it.

Installing Rails and Mongrel on a Shared Host

In some situations you may find yourself needing to install mongrel or other ruby gems in a shared environment and the documentation out there for taking on such an enterprise is quite lacking.

Today I went through the trouble and figured out how.

In my previous article, Render Great-looking Collages with Ruby and RMagick, I showed how you can use RMagick to generate a lovely collage from a selection of random images. This tutorial will take it one step further and show you how to use RMagick with RFlickr to generate a collage from your own Flickr account or even a results from a flickr search.
